There's a lot of hype about the flipped classroom and it's being promoted as a teaching approach to engage students in more active learning rather than just being passive recipients of information as in more traditional lectures.
But are students doing the necessary preparation for flipped sessions and are they more attentive and engaged than in ordinary lectures. The experience at the University of Virginia Medical School would indicate that students are checking out of these sessions, there is low attendance, students are unprepared and attention is still a problem.
